PE

Intent Statement

The Parker PE department recognise the importance of developing a broad curriculum offer that inspires students to lead a physically active lifestyle through providing opportunities to positively impact their physical, mental and social health. Students will be encouraged to develop their knowledge in a physical, cognitive, affective, social and healthy learning domain. This will be achieved via a high quality provision, providing opportunities to develop physical confidence, understanding of health, fitness and values via competition in; Invasion games, athletics, net/wall, gymnastics, dance, Striking and Fielding and Outdoor Education.  Participation and learning through the physical element of PE is a main focus, however we provide opportunities for students to develop in their leadership skills taking on roles such as a coach, official or activity organiser.

Transition

Year 7 and 8 will start the year with a physical preparation unit focusing key Fundamental components. This will be delivered in year 7 to ensure the gap in knowledge from Key Stage 2 is addressed, preparing students with the core foundation knowledge to move forward into Key Stage 3 content. This will include enhancing their running, jumping, throwing and catching knowledge and application, athletics movements involving balance, control, flexibility and strength. With a key focus on student’s ability to understand technical points, compare and evaluate self and peer performance, the basic principles of attacking and defending within in teams and as individuals. This will then be returned to in Year 8 to enable to student to develop their core foundation knowledge further. It is important for students to understand these components to ensure they have the relevant understanding and basic literacy to successfully access the curriculum and therefore begin their journey n life-long participation and love for physical activity.

Year 7 and 8 Curriculum

Following the physical preparation phase, students will progress to invasion game based activities which will interweave to link into the overall composites of attacking and defending principles, develop health lifestyles and developing students in relation to the learning domains.

In Year 7 students will focus on the knowledge of key movements involved in attacking and defending through a mixture of invasion games, to enable them to build the foundations and link principles together throughout the year. Within these, the substantive knowledge of attack and defence will then be combined the disciplinary knowledge of each sport.

In Year 8 students will revisit the core knowledge of each invasion game, with developed focus on their tactical development through small sided games, enhancing their ability to apply their core knowledge to outwit opponents. The activities used in this phase of the curriculum will include Football and Rugby, as they are activities that students are familiar with both on through participation and within the media. The school has strong club links within the community, enabling us to signpost students to clubs following a positive experience within lessons and therefore further enhancing their physical, mental and social health. This will also enable students to develop a positive relationship with the activity when performance but also engaging in professional performances.

Netball and basketball are developing activities in the school, both in girls and boys PE. The two link well together and can easily be adapted into other games such as benchball and korfball to develop core knowledge further. Netball nationally has a big part to play in engaging girls alongside football, with a National league side in Coventry and opportunities for inter school competition netball is delivered throughout the year. Basketball within the extra-curricular provision has become popular and has been added to encourage students to participate in a less known activity to enhance their knowledge of all games, but to also identify any unseen talent and enjoyment for the game. The school has also developed strong links with the local club which again will help develop healthy active lifestyles.

Hockey is an activity on the decline in popularity however the school had strong links with local clubs, it also provides similar knowledge and thinking to football which will enable a positive cross over and understanding of key concepts.

Within these activities students will develop core knowledge of attacking and defending principles, including passing, dribbling/running with the ball, shooting/finishing, tackling, attacking and defensive formations. Students will be able to link knowledge between activities and use the principles within each, understanding how and when to replicate each discipline successfully through a progression/repetition approach that will build confidence and enhance the replication of these core areas. As they progress from year 7 into 8, students understanding of the key foundations will support the development of their physical literacy but interlink the concepts to successfully perform the disciplinary knowledge of decision making, reflecting and adapting their performance and improving mental capacity to enhance outwitting opponents across all disciplines.

Interlinked with invasion games, students will look at badminton, trampoling/gymnastics and dance. Badminton enables students to think about performance as an individual and as a team (pairs) this is a popular activity and encourages students to be involved, developing confidence and resilience. Trampolining/gymnastics/dance are very popular amongst the girls and enable students to understand control, decision making, develop a positive attitude and increase involvement and engagement. Next to the academy is the local gymnastics and trampoling centre which students can progress to continue a healthy lifestyle and life long participation.

Healthy lifestyles will also be included, aiming to be interlinked with all other aspects of the curriculum. However, developing knowledge of how to remain fit and healthy through the use of different methods such as the gym or outside area is beneficial to students and how it links to the activities they undertake.

Some of spring and summer term will involve students taking part in athletics, cricket, rounders and softball. Athletics has a direct link back to the start of the year when we focused on key fundamental skills, providing a number of disciplines which enables students be successful and improve individual performance and confidence. The PE department has been very successful over the last 20 years with this area and have strong links with the local club and coaches. We want students to develop a positive attitude to the discipline and use their resilience to help them succeed and then continue outside of school at club and extra-curricular provision. Cricket, rounders and softball are used as they have transferable knowledge and all three encourage teamwork and individual performance. Cricket is also used with both boys and girls to help build on the success of the national sides in both genders and to enhance the local initiatives to increase the uptake of the game.

Within year 7 and 8 students will focus on developing their core knowledge of each component to build their confidence and motivation to take part in PE and activity. Along with improving their resilience and communication which can benefit them across the academy.

Year 9 Curriculum

Students progressing to year 9 will have a pathway programme: pathway one focusing on development of activities to enhanced level of understanding from year 7 and 8; pathway two focusing on developing health lifestyles. This will include activities that will enhance student knowledge and engagement to continue and develop a love of physical activity.

Pathway one will focus on activities covered in Year 7 and 8, enhancing knowledge further of each area and developing their tactical and fitness areas. Students will be involved in more independent and leadership work to enhance their knowledge.

Pathway two will enable students to take part in activities such completed in previous years along with developed games at a lower intensity to help develop confidence, character and understand the role activity has in developing a healthy lifestyle.

Students in all years will encouraged and signposted to extra curricular activity to take part in competitive training for inter school fixtures or to enjoy a recreational session to enhance their healthy lifestyle.

Overall, through a high quality and broad curriculum we will develop students’ knowledge to enhance their techniques which enables them to be physically active and competitive. They will use and apply this across different activities and begin to link key concepts and composites together as they progress. This will enable them to have the knowledge and experience as they progress through the curriculum to successfully use a range of tactics and strategies, look at their own and others performance and use their knowledge to develop this and solve any problems.

Students will have the opportunities to work within teams and as individuals, developing their mental capacity, being social and emotional enabling them to build character and understand values and benefits of physical activity.

Through developing these key areas alongside cultural capital our students will gain the knowledge and positive experiences to maintain a healthy lifestyle but also a love for activity which will see lifelong involvement as a participant, coach, volunteer or a supporter.
